How are avalanches formed?
Avalanches are the result of snow being deposited in layers over the course of the winter. The layers are sometimes dissimilar enough to create an area of slippage between them, which causes some part of the snowpack to slide and fall. The vast majority of avalanches occur during snowstorms, and the likelihood of an avalanche is affected by the components of the Avalanche Triangle: weather, terrain, and snowpack.
