How are art captions developed?
Art captions emerge as a collaboration between the Editor and a technical person who understands what is happening in the photo or other illustration. We use the artwork as a bridge to draw in a wide audience of non-specialists to read the article. First they see the picture and they like it. Then they read the caption and find they can understand it. Then they want to know more, and read the article. The Editor can judge how to pitch the caption to a non-specialist audience.
