How are activities seclected for Science Lab?
The activities are selected and planned based on meeting several objectives including: a. Emphasis of science-process education standards; b. Opportunity for students hands-on involvement; c. Time allowed for student activity AND group discussion; d. Possibilities for extended exploration in the regular classroom, or by self-directed students; e. Age appropriate tasks and concepts; f. Safety; g. Training and understanding of Science Lab volunteers; h. Ease of preparation; i. Cost and availability of supplies; and j. Resources required such as space, water, electricity, etc. Obviously, many good ideas and science lesson plans have to be modified to fit the Science Lab format. For example, Science Lab activities are often adjusted for the age of the students. Sometimes activities are rewritten to emphasize the science skills covered so that our volunteers can present students with appropriate questions and suggestions.
