How are 511 calls routed and what are the costs?
For landline calls, the 511 code is translated to your system’s 10-digit number and then sent to the telephony system for the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. Some telephone carriers charge for the initial translation setup and, in some cases, carriers may assess recurring charges as well. The process is similar for wireless calls and carriers, although most wireless companies are less likely to charge a fee for the initial routing or any recurring charges. If they do institute recurring charges, the costs vary and are often part of the negotiation between the 511 implementer and the carrier.
