How applicable is Berlo’s SMCR model of communication when describing music visually and textually?
The core investigation of the MA project relates to the successes of digital visual translations of music, based on semiotic theory, presented to people with hearing impairments. This paper looks to address the applicability of Berlo’s SMCR model in relation to this central core of practice and forming arguments for and against its relevance when communicating through the mediums of text and visuals. Focus will be given to Berlo’s SMCR model as a basis and juxaposing the model’s elements against the nodes of other communication models in order to attain a conclusion to the question posed. Elements regarding sound will be omitted in all models being compared in order to form a conclusion as to whether sound is a fundamental node to successful communication. A concise definition of a model will be given, followed by an in-depth analysis of Berlo’s SMCR model. Following this, each node within the model will be compared and contrasted with models such as The Shannon-Weaver Mathematical Mod
