This oldest and most expensive American military decoration is awarded under but one circumstance: the full-time active duty service member sheds blood in combat as a result of a wound suffered at the hands of forces hostile to the United States. Wounds suffered as a result of so-called friendly fire do not meet the criteria for the awarding of a Purple Heart.
