Raw cotton is used widely in mattress making, being very soft and versatile in its use. In all cases it is first carded to remove unwanted particles, nourished with natural oils, and then used loose (to be teased by hand) or compressed into cotton felt before being treated with fire retardant. It is sometimes blended with polyester for increased resilience.
