How and why do foot ulcers develop?
A foot ulcer is a breach in the skin integrity or the integument. A blister is the beginning of an ulcer. Once an ulcer has occurred, it may advance before a person with neuropathy realizes how serious it has become. If an infection sets in deeply, or even affects the bone, antibiotics alone may not be enough to recover that person. This is where an amputation may be the only course of action.
