How and why did Germany remain divided after WW2?

0

The Allies, The US, Britain, France and Soviet Union each occupied a sector of Germany, and the 3 western allies, US, Britain and France took West Germany and were going to occupy it for 4 years, until 1949. The Soviet Union (or Russia) took East Germany. But they were not willing to give up control. And Berlin, in the middle of East Germany was also divided into 4 sectors, West Berlin into US, British and French, East was Russian. West Berlin, politically part of West Germany, was totally surrounded by East Germany, and Russia wanted the whole thing, and there was a lot of cold War tension over Berlin. This culminated in August 1961 when East Germany and the Soviets built the Berlin Wall to keep East Germans from escaping into West Berlin. This was preceded by several months of tension between the US and Soviet Union. Germany remained divided until after the Berlin Wall was taken down in 1989. Bringing down the wall was not the end of the Communist government, but showed it was so weak
