We never did get and explanation in the series as to why James, Nikki and Janelle left after season 4. They were gone the first episode of season five when Charlie Sheen took over. You probably know that the show was shot in New York during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th season but when Michael J. Fox left, the show was “transferred” to LA My idea is the actors who played James, Nikki and Janelle lived in NY and didn’t want (or couldn’t) go in California. That could explain why theirs characters left the show. In my opinion most of the spirit of the series got lost there. I read that Connie Britton left because her characters screen time was smaller when Heather Locklear (Caitlin) joined the Spin City crew, but don’t believe a word, you read in the tabloids. It’s sometimes absolute garbage!
