How and where is the pacemaker/defibrillator implanted?
One to three catheters (i.e., electrical wires) are implanted into the heart via the veins on the chest. A pocked under the skin is made on the chest near the shoulder (most often on the left side) where the pacemaker or defibrillator is implanted. The skin is then closed with suture. When the pocket is healed, one can not see any hardware externally (from the outside), only a slight bulge on the skin.
