How acute is the problem of the shortage of water in the River Niger?
The problem is as that of the global climatic changes in which we have less and less rains. The flow or the volume of water in the Niger is reducing and presently it is less than 60 per cent what we used to have 20-30 years ago. Also the activities of the population on the river are causing negative effects. There is deforestation, fishing and others which expose the surface of the river to evaporation. This explains why we are holding the Yaounde workshop to sensitize users of the basin on the best practices to adopt for sustainability of resources in the basin. What precisely can member countries of NBA do to solve this problem? To solve a problem is to appreciate the problem, to know that these problems exist. Each member country is currently being sensitized. The first thing for each member country to do is to educate the users of the basin’s resources.
