How accurate is the Strategic Flood Map?
The Strategic Flood Map was developed to provide an indication of the general areas that may be prone to flooding from rivers and the sea for the whole of Northern Ireland. For that reason the methodology used is consistent with that purpose. There are clear limitations associated with the methodology and data used that inevitably have an impact on the accuracy of the flood plain outlines. For that reason the Strategic Flood Map is not suitable for determining the flood risk to a particular property or specific point location. Information suitable for this purpose can only be obtained through a detailed local study. As studies of this nature are very expensive and time consuming they are not appropriate for a national strategic assessment of flood risk.
