How accurate are the flood maps?
FEMA and its mapping partners (states, communities, and private companies) make every effort to produce flood maps that accurately depict the flooding risk in a given geographic area. Even with recent technological advances that offer improvements in precision, FEMA acknowledges that map issues will arise. Likewise, with development, population growth and flood mitigation efforts, flood hazard areas within a community change over the course of time, affecting the accuracy of the flood maps. With some maps dating back more than 20 years, it is possible current hazard conditions are not reflected on the effective flood maps.
