Hot air rises faster than cooler air around it. Hot air balloons take advantage of this effect to lift a balloon and attached basket into the air. The balloon is basically like a big parachute with a semi closed end with a small opening. Into that opening the burner shoots very hot air, as the hot air rises the balloon fills and lifts off the ground.
