Home>>>Grade-Schooler>>>Do African-Americans spank their children more?
Question: On the parenting boards, African-American people tend to favor spanking (“whooping”) as a method of discipline. Do you think African-Americans spank their children more than white people do? Are they harsher disciplinarians? Answer: Oddly enough, it appears that members of the black demographic do more often tend to employ spanking as a means of discipline. A table in the study “Parents?Discipline of Young Children: Results From the National Survey of Early Childhood Health” done in 2004 by M. Regalado, et al., in the journal “Pediactrics” published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, it is indicated that members of the black demographic employ spanking at a rate of 31% as compared to 16% in the white demographic and 21% in the “Hispanic, Spanish” demographic. I have not here conducted an exhaustive literature search, but a superficial examination of the literature on this subject has yielded these conclusions. I hope this has helped.
