Historical Significance of Battle of Somme?
The First Battle of The Somme as stated was a monstrous disaster. The Brit.s shelled (with artillery) German positions for three days (relentlessly) believing they’d “softened up” those positions. They then blew their whistles and everyone went over the top (came out of their trenches) and marched toward the Germans only to have the well dug in Germans come out of their holes, set up their machine guns and begin mowing down the Brit.s. In the first hour of battle, over 200,000 men died. The British “leadership” refused to let up and just kept ordering more and more into the meat grinder. The battle lasted for months. Back home in England, the authorities managed to clear out entire communities of their young men so as to send them into the slaughter. On average, the Brit.s (via firing squad) shot five a week for “cowardice.” We now recognize it as PTSD. It took decades for those towns to revitalize.
