From a Zen Buddhist perspective, human matter gets created in a pretty straightforward way: A male and a female have sexual intercourse and conceive a child. The rest is thinking. The unique physicality of human life includes a mind that produces thoughts. Most of us cling to, or push away, our thinking. Our constant clinging and aversion produces our suffering. The Buddha taught very clearly that we can end suffering simply by stopping the clinging and aversion. Thoughts, along with feelings, emotions and other mental states, will continue to arise (because that’s what mind does). However, each of us has the choice not to get entangled with this mental output. Buddhist meditation practice helps us see that this mental output has no independent reality. When we deeply perceive this for ourself, we are said to be enlightened.
