Key themes in Marxism can be divided into these three sets of its useful research tools 1.-concepts 2.- focus within any issue 3.-thus the research questions we can develop from it Marxian theory: 1.concepts: -historical materialism – that societies develop historically and that the key dynamic is ‘who controls the material resources’ -dialectical materialism: that the dynamic of this history of control over resources is not one of smooth progress but of conflict between different interest groups ie ‘classes’ so the next key concept is -class conflict: that all histories are histories of class conflict -contradiction: that term ‘dialectic also involves the concept of contradiction eg the class conflict underlying the move to modernism incorporated the contradictions between a)the enslaving, appropriating, and exploitative aspects of colonialism as Western nations fought their ‘ great game’ in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australasia, and Africa and b)the ideology of Democratic Liberalis
