High levels of sickness indicate por morale. What needs to be done to raise the morale of teachers ?
What needs to be done to raise the MORALE of teachers? Let them teach. They need an environment of support where they can actually teach in an inspiring way. They have so many side issues to deal with: Poor student behaviour (I think the parents should be made to come sit in the classroom for at least a week and make their offspring behave 🙂 ) Far too much admin, emails etc Difficult, horrid parents Far too many students with huge problems – both social and learning – these students need to be supported in very small groups (with a social worker as well as a teacher) Sometimes they have very difficult supervisors who put blocks in their way.
I don’t blame teachers who are “calling in sick”. I had this one teacher who told me that if this was Africa that the kids in the classroom would not act how they do because the teacher has the right to beat them. Lol While I’m not suggesting they adopt that habit in America, I am saying that the problem probably is rooted within the kids, especially in public schools. Then, when you have a teacher spending countless hours grading tests and creating teaching plans and then none of the kids are passing, I would imagine they feel they are wasting their time. I don’t know how much teachers make but I mean, for the amount of work and stress that teachers put up with, they definitely should bring home a decent amount of money. Maybe if schools got more funding then their would be more teachers, smaller classrooms and better materials/equipment which would lead to better student performance and probably an increased interest from the students which would inevitably lead to better teacher mor
