Sad as it is to say, if you have an ethnic background you probably won’t have much trouble getting back in and claiming benefits because you’ll be able to claim discrimination if you’re turned down and there are lots of agencies that will make sure you get your “rightful” benefits. If you’re white, born in England and have done everything right, like work and pay taxes in the UK years ago, forget it – they won’t help you – or you’ll have to fight damned hard for anything. You could go back and stay in a YWCA/YMCA shelter claiming homelessness and they should be able to help you get benefits and housing.
