Normally the onboard sound is for 2.1. But you can open your CPU and you will find a CPU map stuch inside somewhere. It will clearly say what sound card do you have “ONBOARD”. Alternatively have a look at the back of your CPU, you will se ‘female 3.5mm head phone jacks. Normally there are 2-3 jacks, one for external speakers and one for microphones, in some cases there are two speaker out jacks. If the number of female 3.5mm jacks exceeds 4, then in that case your computer might support a 5.1 decoder. Also you will find this information on the instruction manual of your motherboard. Also check the PCI slots if you have a sound card installed. If you do not have any of the above mentioned, then you do not have a sound card and you need to buy one. Maybe a PCI or a USB external. If you want to compromise on sound and would like to go for a MONO sound, then buy a 1–>2 head phone splitter jack and plug in your two speaker wires in the splitter and connect it to the existing speaker jack..
