Legislation allows Local Authorities to give 50% relief from rates to post offices and general stores in areas designated by the Government as ‘rural settlement areas’. To qualify for 50% relief, the property:  must be within the boundaries of a qualifying settlement  must have a rateable value of not more than 6,000  must be used, in whole or part, as general store or post office, or both and  must be either the only general store or the only post office in the settlement. If you qualify for this relief, it will already be shown on your bill.
