PISTONS Tim – We’re just starting the overhaul of Webb’s Series 8 engine. It had never been apart – can you imagine? Anyway, it’s worn beyond belief. A quick call to Egge last week surprised us as well – the castings are underway. We were told it was the E221 with the 3.5625 comp., but the E656 with the 3.625 is way better. It’s interesting to note that the E656 is listed in Egge’s inventory charts as a Franklin Piston. The extra compression should not bother us a bit. As far as ring room, I think we could add 3/4″ without trouble! It’s a mistake to think a Power hone can do a better job than boring to keep a cylinder straight. A hone will always follow the ‘hole’. Boring will make the hole true to the base. Honing a blind cylinder is also very tricky. The operator cannot stroke the hone ‘through’ the top. This creates a tendency for the top of the bore to begin to choke, or narrow down. A skilled operator, honing by hand, can work the top of the bore in such a way to keep it from neck
