It is difficult to provide a thorough experience of a differing culture when you cannot, or must not, partake in aspects of the culture. I know that when my highschool class (graduating class, therefore all 17 or 18 year olds)went to France, a letter was sent to the parents (Through the mail, and asked for the answers to be posted to us, not given to the students) informing them of the cultural differences between Canada and France vis a vis alcohol. We also requested the parents’ permission to allow the students to have a glass of wine with their meals if they chose to do so. If the parents said no, no it was.
