Although Islam only became widespread more recently, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it has strong roots in ancient Africa. Sub-saharan african peoples had strong political, economic and cultural ties (including education) with Islamic people since the time of Mohammed in the first century AD. The same cannot be said for Christianity which had little impact on ancient Africa, but especially if you mean sub-Saharan Africa (the horn of Africa is a different story so if by “ancient Africa” you mean Egypt, then this answer is not much help).
