HELP! Is my budgie having egg binding?
Proper calcium levels are very important in birds, but especially in nesting hens in preventing egg-binding. Providing a cuttlebone and fresh greens is a great way to make sure she is getting all her calcium (in general, the darker the green, the more calcium it has; broccoli, kale and romaine lettuce are all good). Make sure when you give her the cuttlebone that the soft side if facing up. If the hard side is facing up, she won’t be able to get any of the calcium off of it. Vitamin D3 is very important during this time because it is what makes her able to absorb the calcium. Without D3, no matter how much calcium she ingests it won’t matter because her body won’t be able to absorb it. you can give her D3 through a liquid vitamin that you put in her water (there are plenty of these out there, as long as it says on the ingredient list that it has D3 it will work) or you can buy her a bird lamp that puts out UVB.
