First of all, your parents sound a bit insane. I don’t mean to sound rude, everyone has their faults, but to disown you for deciding against a career that you believe will make you unhappy – that is not a position taken from love. If they truly love and care about you, they’ll support you in whatever will make you happy. And if they won’t, which is more important – maintaining relations with people that don’t want what’s best for you (no matter the indebtness we all have to our parents for raising us), or finding your personal happiness? The choice seems clear to me, but people want funny things from life. Personally, my own happiness and serving the greater good are the top priorities. So if I found myself on a career path that wasn’t going to satisfy me (and I have several times in my 27 years), I would change paths. That said, you can’t ignore financial realities. If you’ve just finished the first year of medical school, are you tens of thousands of dollars in debt? Don’t underestim
