Have you needed to upgrade storage space or server capabilities since installing WebCT?
Our initial server had 25 gigs of diskspace, 512 meg of memory and was a dual processor Dell. At the beginning of Fall Semester ’98, several WebCT courses comprised of thousands of students began to extensively use the quiz module. Unfortunately, the quiz module at that time was one of the few WebCT components that was still written in the “perl” programming language, which is slower in terms of responsiveness than other WebCT components that have been converted to the “C” programming language. As a result, there were occasional times that performance degradation was experienced in the WebCT system. This usually occurred when thousands of students attempted to complete a quiz within a similar time period. UCNS immediately obtained and installed a pre-release copy of WebCT v1.3 which has a greater percentage of the quiz module written in the “C” programming language. UCNS also initiated the emergency purchase of a new server. We replaced the original WebCT server on November 14, 1998. T
