There are about 12 professional Wing Walkers on the air show circuit today. All walk and maneuver around the wings and upper center section of a biplane (usually a Stearman) in flight. It takes a lot of nerve and physical conditioning to do it on a continuing basis. There is a difference between “Wing Walking” and “Wing Riding.” A Wing Rider is secured atop the center section or between the wings prior to take-off and remains in that position throughout the flight. A Wing Walker usually commences the flight in the cockpit and then moves about the airplane using carefully selected hand holds and positions throughout the routine. If you have ever put your arm out of the car window at 70 MPH you have some idea of the type of pressures that you must endure throughout a Wing Walking routine. I have been a Wing Rider once only.
