Have there ever been any concerns about LoD diluting the BLP brand?
Simon: I was worried about this when we first put the proposal together but it really has not been an issue. Because I’m a partner at BLP, I have a foot on both sides, which actually works quite well. I am able to make sure that whatever LoD does works for the general partnership. We also really emphasized that this is a different service. Clients are buying something from LoD that is different from the traditional BLP. It’s not work that we were previously doing or well-placed to do. But even if it does start taking work from traditional BLP, then we can’t bury our head in the sand. If we don’t do it, someone else will. Hildebrandt: Is this kind of venture easier to do from within an existing law firm or from scratch? Jonathan: It’s useful to have a base that’s as sophisticated as the BLP client base as well as the BLP infrastructure. Because I’m from BLP, people will sit up and listen.
