Recently there have been cases of steam dryer cracking and flow-induced vibration damage on components and supports for the main steam and feedwater lines at some of the power plants that are operating at an uprated power level. Our regional inspectors performed inspections to identify the causes of these issues and evaluated many of the repairs performed by the licensees. We continue to monitor the industry’s response to these issues and will consider the need for additional regulatory action, if needed. In addition, the NRC has requested specific information from Entergy regarding steam dryer cracking and flow-induced vibration as part of its review of the VY EPU application. Quad Cities had to temporarily shutdown due to a safety problem shortly after it increased its power output to 18%.
