Have text messaging(sms), online chat rooms, and instant messaging adversely affected communication?
I’d say when text messaging(sms), online chat rooms, and instant messaging, are used together with face-to-face interactions, communication gets a boost because the continuity remains. These tech mediums do what they’re meant to – make the world a global village. Communication transcends national borders, and you can reach anybody anywhere instantly. People who may be on the move are able to stay connected throughout the process. People in relationships are still in touch, separated only by the touch of a button. Similarly, companies that hope for a global presence stay connected with their people and associates in different continents. There is no waiting in sending or receiving data and information. The different time zones actually facilitate performance because when one region sleeps the others are active to keep the work churning. But of course they can’t replace face-to-face interactions for various other reasons, some of which you mention.
