Have scientists underestimated the impact of the intelligent design movement?
Many scientists probably have been caught unawares, in part, because they dont see an inherent conflict between science and religion. They often are more comfortable in the laboratory, doing science and communicating it to students, than they are in the public arena. But it is clear they can no longer afford to ignore the political reality of the intelligent design movement and its effort to sway school boards and curriculum committees in many states and communities. The AAAS is determined to remain engaged on this issue and encourages other scientific groups to do so as well, particularly at the grass roots level.
