Have safe limits for melamine and cyanuric acid in foods been established?
In November 2008, FDA concluded that “levels of melamine alone or cyanuric acid alone, at or below 1 part per million (ppm) in infant formula do not raise public health concerns.” The FDA added their “ongoing investigation continues to show that the domestic supply of infant formula is safe and that consumers can continue using U.S. manufactured infant formulas.” In December 2008, the World Health Organization established a tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 0.2 milligrams per kilogram of bodyweight per day for melamine. Health Canada has adopted the WHO recommendation, and has established a safe limit of 0.5 parts per million for melamine in infant formula.
