Have any guys here ever experienced a proper shave at a barbers…was it any good?
I have had three in my lifetime. They are really great, and were worth what I paid. Two of them were in Germany and one was in the United States. I started off with the barber washing my face and then wrapping it with hot towels. It seemed like the towels were on my face for a long time. It was later explained that the hot towels were to “soften up” my beard and make the shave go easier. The barber used an old-fashioned straight-edge razor, of probably the same design as they used more than 100 years ago. He got out a leather razor strop to make sure the blade was just right. Instead of using a hot lather machine, he used an old-fashioned shaving mug with a bristle brush to make the shaving foam. Oh, yes, he cautioned me not to move my face muscles when he was shaving. When I shave myself with a Gillette safety razor, I have a tendency to contort my face so that I get the right kind of an angle with the blade. This was not necessary with a professional shave. The barber does the work.
