Has Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) recanted his statement that Salmon Rushdie should be killed?
He has repeatedly claimed that he never made such statements and that the program was edited to make him look bad. EDIT: I didn’t say that, he did. I saw a clip of it, and it didn’t appear edited but who knows. I’m going to play devil’s advocate for minute. I will say that MAYBE the first “Yes, yes.” was just Cat affirming that he understood who they were talking about. As far as the second Q, the show is called ‘Hypotheticals’ and many devout Muslims would be forced to say the same. The clip I saw ended before the last statement so I can’t comment on that. I’m a fan of both Rushdie and Stevens, and I find it hard to believe that the man who wrote ‘Where Do The Children Play’ would be capable of such thoughts. It wouldn’t be the first time that religion created a distorted world view though. Also, being a celebrity and the ‘face’ of Islam to the west, he may have been pressured into saying things he didn’t mean. If he tells the truth now, he may have a ‘fatwa’ calling for his head. A l
