Has widespread planting taken place around the Lower Lakes shorelines to help prevent acidification?
Yes. Revegetation of exposed shorelines could help prevent acidification of the Lower Lakes by contributing organic matter to assist bioremediation. In November 2008, trials were carried out to identify the most suitable shallow rooted plants to assist with bioremediation. Results from this trial were used as part of wide spread revegetation project during autumn 2009, where approximately 5,000 ha were planted through aerial and on ground seeding during autumn 2009. The main way to prevent acidification is to ensure acid sulfate soils are kept wet and not exposed to the air.
