Has the National Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program been a success?
Yes. Since its inception, over 6.5 million screenings have been provided to more than 2.7 million eligible women, resulting in the diagnosis of more than 26,000 breast cancers; 88,000 precancerous cervical lesions; and 1,700 cervical cancers. One of the program’s greatest successes has been reaching women at earlier stages of their cancer, where more options are available for treatment and for improved quality of life. However the program is only serving 1 out of 5 eligible women.
