Has the human race lost the ability to evolve?
“The weak die off, only the strongest will survive” – not quite – it’s those who survive long enough to reproduce more offspring than others (for whatever reason) will pass more of their genes to the next generation – this is natural selection not evolution. Evolution is a population-level event where the gene frequencies of a population shift as the genes from naturally selected individuals become fixed in the entire population. The biggest mortality factor for primitive human populations was childhood disease. If only the “strong” survive – we can best define “strong” as genetically disease-resistant. By instituting a program along the lines you imply, it will not be “the retarded, the disabled, or those who have otherwise defected from the model of a human” who will bear the brunt, it will be 50 to 90% of all children who would ordinarily succumb to disease without adequate nutrition, clean water, antibiotics, vaccinations, and other medical attention.
