The Genographic Project received full approval from the Social and Behavioral Sciences Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Pennsylvania Office of Regulatory Affairs on April 12, 2005, for research conducted by the North American Research Center. In addition, local IRBs or ethical review committees will be responsible for the review and approval of studies conducted by the international research centers. All local laws concerning genetic sampling and anthropological fieldwork will be followed, and necessary permits are being obtained by the regional research centers prior to any field sampling. The purpose of an Institutional Review Board is to protect the rights and welfare of human research participants. The IRB operates in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards necessary for research involving human participants. For more detailed information about the project, please contact genographic@ngs.org.
