To say that those 7,254 people are involved in ‘search’ is a little ridiculous. Google chrome has nothing to do with search, Google wave has little to do with their main search product, Google translate, Google earth, Google docs and Gmail are a huge part of their bussness now, I would imagine. And an enormous amount of work goes into their main product: adwords. Google’s main business is selling advertising, and of course creating things (like gmail) to put advertising on. Things like Google chrome and Google wave are aimed at simply “making the web better” and all the research Google does with maps and Google earth is so that they can sell location-based advertising. Most of what they do is making ad placement better. That’s not to say they’re not doing any research, obviously they are (but they also have a strategy of buying search Startups who come up with innovative ideas: which means they’ll only have to pay for ideas that work out) Furthermore, what the big search engines like b
