While the BP oil spill is a horrible disaster to the ocean and the ecosystems in the Gulf and surrounding areas, Obama is exaggerating when he says it is the worst environmental disaster to hit the US.

Exxon Valdez Oil SpillThe impacts so far have been much less than everyone has expected. Although this oil spill has killed many birds, it is only 1% of the damage that the Exxon Valdez oil spill 21 years ago (seen in the image to the left). There have been restrictions on fishing, but some areas have been tested okay to continue fishing.

So the oil spill is a terrible environmental disaster, it is not the worst thus far that the United States has ever faced. It’s up there, but there have been worse.
