Has podcasting encouraged greater student engagement and independent learning?

Student engagement has for a number of years presented an increasing challenge, particularly given the limited taught contact time on the undergraduate programme (on average 8 hours per week) and the growing financial necessity for learners to undertake part-time employment. By being able to give students the opportunity to listen again to guest lectures and assignment guides has in our experience contributed to some students’ improved knowledge and awareness of the subject material, coming to lectures and tutorials better prepared to discuss and ask questions. However this is not across the board and there remains a core minority who regularly miss lectures and don’t necessarily engage with the Virtual Learning Portal at NTU. One of the interesting ‘unintended consequences’ of the shift towards e-learning and m-learning has been the approach of one or two students to engage with these opportunities but at the same time to distance themselves from the traditional teaching and learning
