Has ‘pipe bursting’ or other trenchless technology been considered for the replacement of Winslow Way underground utilities?
Trenchless technology is a method of replacing underground pipes by sliding a new material through the existing pipes, thereby reducing surface disruption and excavation. Due to the impaired structural integrity of our existing sewer and storm pipes, the number of lateral service connections, the need to operate our existing utilities while they are being replaced, and the susceptibility of trenchless replacement to unforeseen delay, this method of construction will not be pursued. In addition to utilities, the Winslow Way sidewalks, electric distribution, street paving, and traffic operations all need attention to serve us for the next 50 years. By performing all of the work at one time using standard methods of construction we are minimizing the disruption time, increasing the predictability of construction delays, and getting the most bang for our buck.
