Has PETA visited Alaska to promote the ethical treatment of fish?
A. I’m not sure what places we’ve visited. The general trend of the fish industry is exhausting the fish population at an alarming rate. Natural populations of fish have been reduced by 90 percent since the 1950s. By supporting this industry, we support destruction of the environment and contribute to an unhealthy lifestyle. We’re just encouraging people to make compassionate decisions. Q. Does PETA make a distinction between the cruelty of farm fishing and that of commercial fishing? A. The two things go hand in hand. Wild fish are caught by huge trawlers that cast enormous nets that drag fish and other life from the bottom and squeeze them in nets for hours, their lungs burst and their eyes pop out. Along with that, other wildlife, like turtles and dolphins, get caught in nets. These trawlers, when they cast nets on the ocean floor, drag up the ocean bed with them – coral life suffers, ocean forests suffer. Whatever else comes up with them is usually tossed back in the water. Sometim
