Has Joe Arpaio Declared His Own War Against Mexico?
Today, Maricopa County Joe Arpaio conducted a sweep of an area owned by the United States Air Force called the ” Barry M. Goldwater Range”. The sweep which began at six p.m. Mountain Standard time and ended at 2:00 a.m. was conducted in the area according to Maricopa County officials due to its high use by smugglers. Sheriff Arpaio is known for controversial statements and today was no different. He authorized the carrying of a 50 caliber machine gun and was quoted by the local press as saying: “I am trying to send a message to Mexico,” “We will not take anyone hurting our deputies. We will fight back.” The sheriff, by addressing his statement toward the country of Mexico instead of toward the individuals who are violating U.S. laws apparently seems to be ratcheting up rhetoric in a very heated political atmosphere taking place in the United States at this time and the infamous newly passed Arizona law: S.B. 1070.
