Has it sunk in that Slumdog Millionaire has become such a big hit?
No, it has not sunk in yet. We began promoting the film in September last. We have been visiting a lot of cities and festivals — it’s been extremely thrilling. Did you meet your director Danny Boyle’s expectations while playing Jamal? Danny wanted a loser. Jamal had to be an underdog, an average Joe. Danny saw that in me. Initially, he wanted to cast his lead guy from Mumbai. He had a hard time finding the right person. Boyle’s daughter was watching the British show ‘Skins’ when her father returned from a round of casting in India. When Boyle told her that he could not find an apt male lead, she pointed out to my character on the tube. How did it feel when you were selected for the film? If I compare this role to my work in ‘Skins’, where I play a young boy whose only care in life is sex, it was a complete contrast.
