Has India branched out and created its own EDA companies?
Jani: Absolutely. We have something like 133 members in the India Semiconductor Association. Of those, about 60% are multinationals. The other 40% are Indian companies. They were started in India and they are capable together of making complete chips end to end. Q: How about China? Liu: China is not strong in software. One reason is the language barrier. English is not the official language in China and most software and tools are written in English. Another reason is the software industry is an IP industry that needs to be protected by law. China didn’t do a very good job in the past. Both are changing. Most schools teach English at a very early age and IP protection is getting better. It is important for China to adopt more and more IP generated in the West. Most Chinese companies have designed their products from scratch because it costs less money to do that. But they lost market opportunities and money by doing that. Q: So how far is China away from becoming very competitive in ED
