Has globalisation caused human rights issues?
When you are unknowing of the man in the gutter, starving and ill, you can hardly blame yourself for not helping him. You didn’t know he was there. Once you see him, you’ve got a moral question to answer: Do i help? This is think is the main human rights issue that was risen through globalization: Simply because we know a genocide is happening in Rwanda, we cannot sit and do nothing. Simply because we buy the shoes made in sweatshops in India, we become partly responsible. Brutal wars, awful social conditions and the like have been around since the dawn of civilization. Globalization probably stopped more misery than it started, but it makes us responsible. A second mechanism that is nibbling at our human rights is the that of foreign capital and multinational companies. Traditionally, the factor of power in the global arena was the nation state. When nation states became democratically controlled, these states began to service their people. Schooling, health care, pensions became norm
